Zoom call - Restorative City: In Conversation (10/14/2021)

I have joined a Zoom call for  Restorative City: In Conversation . It was to observe a conversation with designers, planners, and health professionals. The conversation concerned health equity and public space  Notes/ time stamps: 5:04 - Zip code where you live affects your health  5:21 - Design has a political orientation 5:26 - Designer as a facilitator - Public spaces are for us  - Ask community before you do anything/ consent 5:27 - How am I designing for care and joy? 5:28 - Changes of temperature impact changes to green spaces 5:39 - Public spaces - Ask: Who built this and do I trust them?       - Mostly, no. Did you do it for me?  5:46 -  In hospitals people are put into these rooms where they can't fit in. Am I supposed to heal in this environment?  5:48 - Healthcare spaces more local  5:50 - More community gardens  5:51 - Bring artists in public health spaces

In today's meeting, Professor Jill had shown me a website that has maps showing green corridors in the United Kingdom ( Map — Wild West End ). It proves and shows the point that London has multiple green spaces that help connect people to nature.  After discussing Professor Jill's website findings, we looked over my 8 site options. I was still deciding the typology of my thesis project, whether it would be a hospital, rehabilitation center, or a school for children. Professor Jill suggested what if the ideas are combined and the typology of my project is a rehabilitation center for kids since a few of the sites have a school or hospital near. I was asked by Professor Jill, which 3 sites out of the 8 are my most favorite. I chose 3 that are not isolated, near transportation, and have the same typology in the area.  From these handfuls of options to choose from, Professor Jill suggested the following to come down to a site decision: - Check if any of the sites can be connected to

In class today I have spoken with Professor Duddy and I have shown them the possible sites for my thesis project. I have come down to 8 site options. Each contains sites that are vacant and have the following qualities: good views, near a body of water, near a large green space/park. After collecting these options, I have made a pros and cons list to narrow down my choice. It seems that the first option has the most positive notes. But the only downside of this site is that it is slightly near an airport. Some positive things can come out of this near feature, such as a sight of the planes taking off. But the downfall is that it may create too much noise. This is where Professor Duddy advised me to look up noise data from the airport- it can help inform me of the level of noise near the site. A few of the sites are isolated to the general public, which is not a positive component 8 Contestants I came down to these vacant lot options by using google maps. I searched for vacant lots that
