Notes from Jury (12/17/2021)

Robert Zagaroli: to build upon what Frederick and Ting said, maybe your solution is more of a scattered site approach. Joining the healing "pavilions" along the green corridors. So that you get to look at the broader context and map of London with smaller, 'pop up' healing centers. Lia:  Each person heals differently. Why London? Frederic: "Healing the City - Healing the Person" Generate green corridors can be a catalyst that extends throughout the neighborhood. Maybe like "Museum Mile" or the hospitals and clinics in NYC on 1st avenue. Ting: healing corridors throughout the city - string along a path throughout the city. Sanjive:   Think radically - no one will argue that healing isn't needed. Make sure that these healing areas do not turn into private healing centers.

Notes: Have a universal solution/ prototype  Walk greater distances Have a more clinical description of "rehab"  Overcome disability  Tangible & Intangible The entire profile will be sustainable because of green spaces  A park can promote health and wellness Integrate building and park  Becomes part of park  Not every city is like London  Other places have very little open space Create a park with recreation  Building prototype  Solution applies everywhere Done in another city  Rehab is a problem for everyone Health & Wellness Public health system in London Universal healthcare  Parks  Why the design is needed  (Why) existing models don't work well  Look up problems with current rehabs Advocating a better way of doing this  The point that is trying to be made is that the Rehab will be a better experience if I incorporate green spaces into the basic program of it, exercise, "participation"

Zoom call - Restorative City: In Conversation (10/14/2021)

I have joined a Zoom call for  Restorative City: In Conversation . It was to observe a conversation with designers, planners, and health professionals. The conversation concerned health equity and public space  Notes/ time stamps: 5:04 - Zip code where you live affects your health  5:21 - Design has a political orientation 5:26 - Designer as a facilitator - Public spaces are for us  - Ask community before you do anything/ consent 5:27 - How am I designing for care and joy? 5:28 - Changes of temperature impact changes to green spaces 5:39 - Public spaces - Ask: Who built this and do I trust them?       - Mostly, no. Did you do it for me?  5:46 -  In hospitals people are put into these rooms where they can't fit in. Am I supposed to heal in this environment?  5:48 - Healthcare spaces more local  5:50 - More community gardens  5:51 - Bring artists in public health spaces

We were discussing which site to chose- there were options on the north of London and south side of London We made pros and cons points for each section:  North Pros: - More things to address  Cons: -  Site may be harder to work on  South Pros:  - Safer - Needs the green corridors/ lacks it  BOTH - Both sites have an exciting opportunity  These were things to consider to make a choice: - Which site needs it more? - Which site would benefit/grow from changes? - Go with gut feeling

In today's meeting, Professor Jill had shown me a website that has maps showing green corridors in the United Kingdom ( Map — Wild West End ). It proves and shows the point that London has multiple green spaces that help connect people to nature.  After discussing Professor Jill's website findings, we looked over my 8 site options. I was still deciding the typology of my thesis project, whether it would be a hospital, rehabilitation center, or a school for children. Professor Jill suggested what if the ideas are combined and the typology of my project is a rehabilitation center for kids since a few of the sites have a school or hospital near. I was asked by Professor Jill, which 3 sites out of the 8 are my most favorite. I chose 3 that are not isolated, near transportation, and have the same typology in the area.  From these handfuls of options to choose from, Professor Jill suggested the following to come down to a site decision: - Check if any of the sites can be connected to

In class today I have spoken with Professor Duddy and I have shown them the possible sites for my thesis project. I have come down to 8 site options. Each contains sites that are vacant and have the following qualities: good views, near a body of water, near a large green space/park. After collecting these options, I have made a pros and cons list to narrow down my choice. It seems that the first option has the most positive notes. But the only downside of this site is that it is slightly near an airport. Some positive things can come out of this near feature, such as a sight of the planes taking off. But the downfall is that it may create too much noise. This is where Professor Duddy advised me to look up noise data from the airport- it can help inform me of the level of noise near the site. A few of the sites are isolated to the general public, which is not a positive component 8 Contestants I came down to these vacant lot options by using google maps. I searched for vacant lots that

Abstract: Draft #1

Hospitals are known as a place where people receive help for their health. But most of the time the people in their stay desire to recover rapidly to return home where the space is more comfortable and welcoming. It is important to note that spaces contribute to one's state of mind and greatly affect their health if their space is not well designed (insert what is important in the design). We will see how architecture is a great factor in curing a patient's health.
